SYNOPSIS

Raymond and Tagbo met when they were eight years old. Although from radically different worlds - Raymond/Rag is from a single parent West Indian home, while Tagbo/Tag is the only son of middle class Nigerian parents - they remain inseparable until the cusp of their teens, when Social Services find out about Rag's mother's absence, and take him to live with his grandmother in Birmingham. Ten years later, Rag returns to find Tag. While some things have changed completely, others haven't at all. Rag and Tag still want to be together. But now twenty-three, Tag is just finishing law school and discovering how hard it is to find chambers that will take a young black man, despite his first class degree. What's more, Tag's white girlfriend Olivia, has a conventional background and an impressive law degree, but this isn't even good enough for Tag's father, who wants Tag to settle with a nice Nigerian woman.

Tag's father isn't too happy to see Rag either. Rag has returned with neither a university education, nor good prospects, and looking very much like one of the West Indian ragamuffins the evening news is always warning the public against.

But Rag being Rag, didn't really think past finding Tag. He did manage to pay enough rent to last him a month in London, but no one's giving him a job so he can stay. In fact, everything would be simpler if he just went back to Birmingham. The only thing keeping him around is his connection with Tag.

Which has shifted into something more urgent and consuming.

However, between Olivia and Tag's father, he can't see room for himself in Tag's life. Things only get worse when Tag's friend Olisa flies into London. Young, rich and very shady, Rag knows Olisa is up to no good. When Rag and Tag are invited to Nigeria for his Chieftaincy ceremony, Rag is determined to find out what Olisa, and his associate Ikeora, are cooking up.

On arrival Rag soon discovers that Olisa's people are into '419' international fraud, and want Tag's assistance in his latest scam. In the midst of lush village life Ikeora and Rag end up in a confrontation over Tag, using the traditional 'agba' canes. Although beaten by Ikeora in the battle circle, Rag returns to London having won Tag and his own soul.

But Rag has not been completely honest about his life in Birmingham. When confronted with some home truths, Tag makes a move that embroils him further into Olisa's world and Rag finds himself thrown from facing a future without Tag, to risking everything to rescue him. While Olivia finds out another secret that causes as much pain as it saves.

In this tale of family, friendship and love, everyone has to find a definition of what these things mean to them. Then stake their lives on it.

Rag Tag. Love isn't just black and white.
